Well, I don't see any ambiguity in C. Please show me if you see any.

D is in the active voice versus C and makes it more clearer and better than C
Though D was my initial choice I thought that either A or C was more parallel in the use of the pronoun 'that'

ie. that they used to dress....that this robe

perhaps, pronoun parallelism is not applicable???
