Why do these schools ask what other programs you're applying to? Does what you put impact their admission decision?

The official reason is for statistical purposes (information gathering). However, I personally believe that no school should ask this question.

If you are applying to competing schools they might offer you an incentive to come. Same reason why banks ask what other firms you are interview with. It is a good gauge of the competition and what kind of offer they will need to make you. Supply and demand my friend.

Thanks for the replies, guys. During the interview, I asked the lady this question, because I wanted to find out what the official answer is. You guys were right, it's for informational purposes and to gauge who their direct competitors are.
