WHY GMAT over GRE??? [#permalink]
05 Aug 2009, 07:13
I have spent all this year to study for GMAT and I have given GRE earlier....and I know that GRE is lot easier to score on....and I am struggling on GMAT to get a 700. Recently, I read the top business schools such as Harvard, wharton, stanford, and many more have stated accepting GRE scores.....So is it worth spending time struggling for 700 in GMAT where same struggle would get you 95% on GRE??? Does any body also know what is the cutoff for GRE scores at top schools??? Please advice??? Thank you, Abhi

But 700 is 92% and 720 is 95%. And it's easy to get to 720 from 700 imo. Some people may prefer one test over another, but I think they both are a good assessment of your academic ability.

Because unless you are sure you will only apply to GRE-accepting Business schools, Harvard/Stanford/Wharton/MIT are the big ones, then you are better off having a backup option. I believe in the Businessweek article it also mentioned that 95% of business schools are still exclusively GMAT only. I would just take the chance of taking both for the sake of opening up some options in your case. Also I generally feel that it is easier for international students to do well on the GMAT since the GRE tends to be a little more challenging in the Verbal questions and less challenging in the Quantitative portion. (however, that's my opinion)

I would say you do your research and then try to focus on GRE. If you feel school, you intend to attend, is accepting GRE then go ahead with it.
There are many schools that accept GRE, but they have not disclosed it. Yesterday I attended an MBA event and representative from MIT said that MIT is accepting GRE from last 10 years. As discussed in yesterday's event, schools have started accepting GRE just to bring diversification in class. As per most of the schools many probable candidates do not apply to business schools because these candidates do not want to go thru GMAT procedure. Since most of the students take GRE during their college time so in a way it reflects the true potential.
Only Standford( i guess) has the data for GRE while rest all the schools are still analysis process. Kellogg will start accepting GRE score next year onwards while booth still needs sometime to think. Only schools that accept at this moment are Wharton, HBS, MIT and stanford.

I am a cynic. I honestly think the accepting of the GRE is in the off-chance that they may pick up one or two stellar candidates that were not considering an MBA initially. It is also the hope that they can raise tens of thousands of dollars of fees from a potential candidate pool which will not be suitable for the program. To get on an MBA program you sit the GMAT. It is written in the process. The GRE is for other grad courses. Maybe they are looking for some academic overlap cases, but in general I don't see where taking the GRE over the GMAT is a good idea for someone who really wants to go to business school.

Well I am not quite as cynical as underscore, but it seems to me at this point in the game you'd still want to take the GMAT. In the past Stanford has been the only one to take GRE and they're one of the schools that doesn't really have to care that much about test scores, so they don't have to worry too much about what it means to be 95% on GRE vs. GMAT. I'm guessing a lot of other schools don't have the data to compare them effectively now (sure, they know qualitatively). It's like comparing apples to oranges since the population demographics are so different. It seems like it would be safer at this point to show them you aced the GMAT. Obviously it's all just conjecture and as always, the only answer we'll get from them is that they view applications holistically.

It's been on their website for a looooong time. Schools wouldn't decide to accept the GRE and then not "disclose" it. That doesn't make sense. It just means you have to do your research (and in this case, research is just reading their website).
