This question has always put me in trouble. What do you guys write/say for why goal X question? For eg. how to best justify my goal to pursue strategy consulting  1)showing some past professional/non professional experience 2)saying some cool things about strategy consulting and how much I like them 3)showing that strategy consulting is some kind of a natural progression in my career. 4)or something else

i think 1 and 3 are related, and definitely your best bets. although i wasnt asked this question specifically on an interview, i wrote a good chunk of my essays talking about those topics. #2 is too generic, and they are not going to want to hear you go on about the field. instead, they are going to want to hear about your own personal experiences, which is why 1 and 3 work. focus on #3, and use #1 to help support the main idea

I had been thinking along the same lines. But here's the issue. For most past of my career, i have been doing tech consulting. How would you justify strategy consulting as a natural progression ? Just by explaining the challenges/problems you are facing at work or this would require that your existing employer is planning to elevate you to a new role which requires strategy consulting expertise ?

I think the more important question is "what you have done so far for goal X" rather then "why goal X". Everyone has his own liking and disliking, so you generally don't have much to debate on "why". Instead I think one should focus more on: 1. What you have done so far to achieve goal X? This could be your career progression or some certifications etc. 2. What are future prospects of goal X? 3. Your long-term goals and how it is aligned with goal X. You may find the below article useful for self-evaluation for "why MBA". why-mba-84855.html
