During the middle ages, literacy was defined as reading and writing latin

While I agree 'the ability to read and write' in place of the underlined portion is certainly better, I am not sure why the above scentance is wrong. Any ideas ?

im not the sc master here, but i dont think the sentence is parallel as you have it written.
literacy (noun) is being compared to a verb
