E would be correct if persisting were restated as persistance.

Going with C for correct S-V agreement and continuous action (persisting).

B for me

only B and C are close

antropological and psychological speculation
suggests this is something people are not sure about, therefore, the usage of 'how' is better than 'that'

another problem with C is the use of 'are' persisting. We are talking about the past event here !

I was also at a loss to understand the reasoning.
