Why use big words? [#permalink]

Today is my first day ever reading anything about the AWA and it seems you all are encouraging the use of large words; is there a specific reason for this?
I actually have trained myself to do the exact opposite and to simplify my vocabulary so that I may reach a broader audience, particularly while working overseas.
Why should I write for example "Substantiate" instead of "Confirm," "Support," or "Approve?"

In my opinion, you should always tailor your writing to the intended audience. In this case there is no reason to "dumb down" your vocabulary due to fear of not being understood. The computer and graders will have no trouble understanding the meaning of long words, so using them won't hurt your score.
With that being said, I scored 5.5 on the AWA and didn't go out of my way to use big words. So you probably don't have to go out of your way to do so either.
