Will attending an MBB-sponsored Pre-MBA workshop help? [#permalink]
14 Jul 2009, 21:14
I've had the good fortune of being selected to attend an invite-only, one-day long Pre-MBA Summer Workshop sponsored by one of the Big 3 consulting firms. Since I am targeting consulting (and in particular this company) for an internship next year, I plan on shelling out the dough to fly out and attend the event - a pretty penny indeed.
I've already committed to going, but my question to everyone is this: how much do you think attending such an event will help one's chances with getting an offer from this company? What about with recruiting for similar, competitive firms - that is, will saying that one has attended the workshop help to differentiate himself from the throngs of other consultant-wannabes? The Workshop itself is fairly basic and is meant to introduce students to the field of consulting and the firm, but it will not include an actual interview. To those of you who have attended something like this in the past, can you chime in?
Thanks, weezy25

It depends.
According to a friend who is working in one of the Big 3 in Seoul, it will not affect most people. The consultants at these Pre-MBA dinners/workshops tend to remember two people, a) the people who are really outstanding, or b) the people who really make an ass of themselves. The rest are usually forgotten until recruiting starts up again.
If you think you can really leave a good impression, then it helps. Otherwise, it's neutral or potentially harmful (unlikely, I hope.)
I went to all the events I could. At the very least, I got a nice dinner out of it, and I got to meet my fellow admits again as well.

Thanks for your insight xenok. Since I've already committed to attending, I'll make the most of it by researching the firm, reaching out to a few consultants that attended my school, etc. Hopefully I'll end up being a type a) candidate and not the latter!

It definitely wont help you get an internship/job but it will give you a little insight into a firm/job.
