Will TAKING GMAT 4th time go against my Candidature ? [#permalink] New post 07 Dec 2008, 20:48
Curse of GMAT.

I have taken gmat 3 times. gone from 600( q50 v 21) ---> 650 ( q50 v 28) ---> 690 ( q 49 v 34)( Still not happy with performance in english)....,

I have also applied to top tier schools(top 20). But what feeling i am getting is that they expect a 740 + from INDIAN IT MALE who wants to get into Consulting ( 4 Yrs exp..(w/o onsite experience)... so I am planning to take GMAT again because I believe I deserve to get in elite schools.

Do you think taking gmat 4th time will be a red flag from ADCOM of top Schools or will it show persistence of getting in consulting industry(because B schools grads emphasize on having 740 + for being shortlisted by MCK/Bain/BCG)......

IMHO, it depends on how confident you are that you will score higher, i.e the 740 you are hoping for...

At least you have shown improvements on the previous attempts, but if you take it again and can not score better, I definitely think it will hurt you...

I guess for me, taking the gmat 3 times is quite unbelievable, given that once was enough for me...

good luck!

I have heard from a few schools adcoms that they don't care how many ever times one has taken the GMAT. They only look for the highest score. They don't try to find out how many times one has taken the GMAT. Also no i don't think that it will be seen as persistence on one's part if I has taken the GMAT so many times...no one cares...If it gives brings you satisfaction, happiness and hope that ur chances will improve with a higher GMAT...sure go ahead.....but as I understand and also have seen others say...that there is much difference between a 690 and a 730....except that yes...if one with 690 and one 730 have pretty similar profiles...yes 730 will get the pref...but if a 690 scorer has a better profile compared to one with a 730 or even a 740 or even 750 scorer...the 690 will get the preference over others...

at the end of the day...they want a well rounded candidate...not just the one who has proved himself in the world of "education" by getting a better GMAT...but in the world outside called "community"...so chill...

its upto you to decide whether to take GMAT again or work on getting a solid app...if you have time...i.e applying for next yr...u still can give it another shot...but as i said above (and i am sure many others would agree)...its ur decision and whatever makes u happy and satisfied...

hope it helps...good luck...

I think that if you can take it again without compromising the quality of your application (the essays in particular), then it probably can't hurt. However, I doubt that taking it again won't compromise your essays, assuming you're applying this year. I think there are more important things to focus on now that you have a score in the typical ~700 range. All my opinion of course.
