windy question [#permalink] New post 23 Aug 2006, 16:58
There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fosil fuels; more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.

A....
B. generated through wind power now as it was
C. generated through wind power now as was the case
D. now generated through wind power as it was
E. now generated through wind power than was the case

explanations please!

B and D has a right use of idiom "as much... as".

I prefer 'D' for for the use of word "now" before "generated through wind power".

choice between B and D (A and E are out for using as...than)

will go with D for using 'now' at the right place. it is as close to verb as it can be.

"much energy " So than is not needed

D should be it

"it" in D has an unclear referent.

GMAT loves to test "was the case" comparisons.

My wager is on (E)

Again I make the same mistake of picking D.
Will have to work on this construction.

Not gettng wrong this time.....

This is C

A and E are out because of "as much.....than"
B and D are out because of "it". "it" can not refer to clauses. In B and D "it" is refferring to "energy generated".

Of course, the correct comparison is: as....as....was the case

Hint: Be on the lookout for "as is/was the case" constructions. They are more often correct, than not.

another point to eliminate D and E

placement of NOW plays a role in those... it changes the meaning... NOW GENERATED vs. WAS (GENERATED) in 1990.
