use fewer only when referring to countable nouns. Population is very much like a 'blob' and so less/lesser should be used.

D and E are out.

We need 'of' after population and before less, and fewer to refer to the number of breeding females.

Agree with fewer-lesser count. But "of" does not sound good. Therefore, C is the best answer.

I dont like the way lesser sound, we can't say, I have leesser money than you,
it is only less than,

well, just my reasoning,
so I go for A

I managed to pick A, barely managed.
Can anyone explain when to use lesser than and when to use less than.
