18. A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
(A) beating in unison and adopting
(B) they beat in unison while adopting
(C) beat in unison, and adopt
(D) beating in unison yet adopting
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt
I was confused between A and D . 'A Peculiar feature' makes it one feature and was a key part of the sentence. I ruled out C because of that -though it may look parallel in the face of it. i was wondering if 'yet' was needed or not. I think 'yet' makes sense. Gosh, this is getting tough!!
when I read the sentence I found not issues with A, but when I read D and saw yet, which, I guess is needed for a peculiar feature. D is my answer. I think it is needed to shouw the contrast that they beat in unison and yet adopt is own orientation.
I eliminated C because of the key word 'A peculiar feature' in the sentence. C does not seem to explain anything peculiar and gives a rundown of number of things -'adhere to one other', 'beat in unison' and 'adopt whatever'.
A or D seem to explain that the feature is - the cells adhering to each other and how they adhere uniquely.
