IMO E..i think what is required here is understanding the intention of the sentence..the statement tries to say that Americans, even though tehy only account for 5% of the worlds population, consumes so much of the resources...
OA plz?

My ans is E.
The sentence meaning requires the contrast meaning conjunction. Therefore, eliminate A,B,C.
In D, using "having" suggests that US citizens have only 5 %.--> illogical meaning(U.S. citizens can not have 5% of W. population BUT U.S. citiens can be 5% of W. population).--> choose E.

As BMindful said, this sentence requires a contrast triggering word, such as "although" or "despite...". Having said that, this eliminates A, B, and C. Looking at D, you should see that there's an idiom issue here. The idiom should be "Despite + noun phrase"; therefore, "despite having" is an illegit construct of the idiom. (E), though a longer an answer, conveys the meaning and eliminates the idiom error. (E) should be right.
