Withdrawing after acceptance [#permalink] New post 16 Jul 2008, 15:39
Any thoughts on how to tell a school that you're withdrawing after getting accepted off a waitlist elsewhere? I know that it's a fairly common practice but thought I'd see what others' experiences were. Were you appreciative or curt in your tone? Anyone get a deposit back? Did any schools attempt to put up a fight or try to prevent you from matriculating elsewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, after making the deposit. Sorry, forgot to mention that part.

I do not think one would get there deposit back but other than that they should not care.

I would be as appreciative and respectful as possible when declining. After all, you are essentially going back on your agreement to attend their program. If you're completely set on attending elsewhere, however, there's really nothing the school can do. Deposits are pretty much always non-refundable, so I wouldn't count on getting any of those funds back.
