Is the answer A?

B and E are out because of the use of lays
C is out becuase of the usage of "inside of" which is not a correct idiom
In D "artistic rivalry’s boundaries " dosen't sound correct.
Hence A is the only correct choice

A is indeed a subject- verb inversion and seems the best.

A is good

Lay and Lie can be confusing

Lay means to put something down and lie means to rest ...

B and E are definetly out

C inside (of) the boundaries (of) ----WEIRD
D is plain nonsense and just does not fit..

A it is..

(A) Within the boundaries of artistic rivalry lies a sense of family

Reasons that (A) is correct:

- The trailing phrase "the shared genetic inhertience..." should immediately follow what it modifies, and what it modifies is "sense of family". A & B get this right.

- lies is the correct verb, not lays

- a couple of issues related to good, effective expression: "sense of family" is right, "family sense" is wrong;
and "within the boundaries lies" is preferable in this metaphorical context to "x lies inside of the boundaries".

the "million dollar question" is why is lie correct over lay?

i know that lay requires a physical object. ie. lay down that gun.

but why is lie correct without using the POE in this question? What is the concept behind it?

the verb and it's forms are :

Lay(to put) laid laid

please lay the book on the table.

Lie(to recline) lay lain.

she lies on the bed.

In the given sentence, no one is asking to put something somewhere, but is actually addressing the fact that the sense of family lies within the boundaries of .... I hope it makes it clear.

well, english is not my mother tongue and i started learning the alphabets when I was 11.. so it confuses me as much as it is confusing you now.. but, in this sentence, lies means rests. It can't be lays..

anyone with a better explanation?

Can any grammar guru comment on validity of first reason given below?
<>- The trailing phrase "the shared genetic inhertience..." should immediately follow what it modifies, and what it modifies is "sense of family". A & B get this right.<>
