Yup .. A for me too ... "Within the boundaries of artistic rivalry" is the subject here and "lies" makes sense .. "lays" is inappropriate usage ..

(A) Within the boundaries of artistic rivalry lies a sense of family

The sentence after the ":" has to describe the phrase preceding it, which would be familial description.

if you are confused about "lie" vs "lay"... if you can put "place" in the sentence and it makes sense, then use "lay"... "lay" is associated with a physical object

(A) correct
(B) out due to "lay"... Sense is no object, so it can't lay...
(C) 'inside of the boudaries' is awkward, aslo sense is described after, not the boundaries
(D) same as c
(E) lay again

Agree and also a sense of family should be near to the starting of statement after colon.

What is the wrong analogy we are talking about there? Can someone explain?

==> Isnt this rule applicable to semicolon/comma and not colon? The sentences after/before a colon can mostly stand independently, though pronoun references can definitely have preceding references in such cases. Am I missing something, when we are having modifier rules applicable here? I dont think we have any application of noun/adverbial references/modifiers here.
