Hey guys I need a bit of peer review help,

I recently sat the GMAT, and got a 650 Q42/V38, which is from what i read the average for the weekend executive program at Duke. I wanted to give you an idea of my profile and see what you think, and if it would be worth it to apply for the final round at Fuqua for Weekend Executive or If I should wait for FT Fuqua and Kenan/Flagler

I am 26 years old, I graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2006, with a degree in general Biology maintaining a 2.91/4.0 GPA, I also attended for a semester Macquarie Univeristy in New South Wales, Sydney, Australia for a specialized focus on Ecology, maintaining Honors in my courses there. I am an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, I have an extensive long volunteering relationship with Habitat for Humanity, and the Red Cross. I was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, a nationally recognized organization based on faith (more so than maybe other fraternities). I am also on the Exectuive Board of Directors for Epsilon Holding Corporation as a 2 year member, and currently serving my 2nd year. I am a certified teacher from TOEFL, which is Teaching English as a Foreign Language, where I did my fulltime immersion course in Corinth, Greece. I am a certified Master Diver,

My work experience is: 2.5 years at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine under the chairmen of Neurology, as a research Coordinator (a glorified laboratory technichian if you will).

And currently, 1.5 years as a Reseach assistant at the Duke University School of Medicine performing additional clinical and basic research in neurology.

For non-related work experience I also have approximately 6 months of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Corinth, Greece.

Unfortunately, Duke wants about 5 years work experience and I am right on the bubble, but I just wanted to get your opinion on the profile.

You seem a bit young and lacking in business or management experience for the full-time GPA program at Duke or UNC. If your volunteering includes a lot of team leadership, then you could use that for a full-time program application, but if your volunteering is more hammering and legwork, then it may not be able to convince them that you have the team leadership insight that the full-time programs are seeking.

Jennifer,

I'm really surprised to see a response like this from a admissions advisory service. Honestly, how would anyone from my background gain business experience in an economy that has been shattered by 'streamlined' business school to MBA people. I think fresh perspective might be the BEST way to make myself an attractive candidate, rather than the biggest fault.

I do not see how holding steady jobs at 2 of the most powerful research institutions in the world where peer calibration and leadership are the center of attention when working here. Perhaps 5 years WE and a BS is not the typical full time bschool applicant, but honestly, I'm a little turned off by your response. I'm not sure what you would recommend considering not everyone knows exactly what they want to do when they are 18 and faced with picking a major, but honestly, at the time science was very appealing, maybe I would do it different now, but that's in hindsight, and something I cannot change.

I thought that is what business school is about, changing career opportunities while building a solid foundation for all aspects of business. Am I wrong? Are you suggesting that I just stay where I am in medicine and let the business undergrad's apply?

I'm sorry that my response upset you. I am by no means saying that pursuing the MBA does not make sense; my reply is about odds of acceptance to the top programs. For you, the MBA makes absolute sense. The question is whether it makes sense for the top MBA programs to accept you: will you add to the class? will you have good chances of reaching your career goals? will you be a satisfied graduate of the program? These are the questions that the admissions committees grapple with, and the ones every applicant needs to make sure his application answers for them with a resounding YES!
My response was aimed at helping you see the challenges in your application so that you would 1) address them, and 2) apply to a broader range of programs than you otherwise might consider. I certainly hope you get into your top choice of program. To reach that goal, my advice to you was to highlight not your "glorified laboratory technician" experience but instead your leadership in the community to demonstrate that you have the people skills that are essential to become a business leader.
