In its most recent approach, the comet Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance and in about the same position, some 25 degrees above the horizon, that Halley’s comet will pass the next time it appears.

(A) that Halley’s comet will pass
(B) that Halley’s comet is to be passing
(C) as Halley’s comet
(D) as will Halley’s comet
(E) as Halley’s comet will do


The right answer is the (2*4-6)th letter of "ADBCE" for those who want to test it. But this one was often discussed.
Still i have the following question:
Why is that words' order correct : the object X passed the earth at the same distance as will oject Y.

Why not "as object Y will"?

If the same is used for the past:

I came to the same place as you did(and not as did you)

or

the comet passed at the same place as comet y would(not would comet y)

I vote "D". Correct idiom "same...as" is used. Also, "D" is comparing apples with apples and the tense is correct (future).

The order is important in this case because you can compare similar items, i.e. action/activity with action/activity, noun with noun and so on.

In "D", the location is compared with location. "A" & "B" are incorrect idiomatically so don't even go there.

In "C" and "E", location is compared with Halley's comet.

This is what I figured but I may be wrong.
