I used to use pdf995 ( http://www.pdf995.com/). It's free and it's great. Basically, it adds a printer driver that let's you print anything directly to a pdf (a website, word doc, a picture etc.). Now that I have Office 2007, I've started using it to save directly to pdf. But I still have pdf995 if I need a snapshot of a webpage or something.

A free download called "CutePDF" works the same way and I've always been pleased with it.

I have used http://www.doc2pdf.net. It's free. You need to provide an email id and submit your word file. In a couple of minutes you will get an email with the PDF as an attachment. It also allows the reverse - but if the PDF is graphics intensive then the results aren't pretty. Of course - this may not be feasible if you are talking about confidential documents.

you can use google docs. Simply upload word file and after it's uploaded save as PDF. Easy and free.

Converting from .doc to .pdf does not copy everything as it is in a Word document. There are various nemo pdf converters available, some may avoid it but may not avoid other formatting. You can just try different converters. Try this good and easy to use converter, click here. Hope it helps.

I think Adobe Acrobat does a good job if you don't mind shelling out a few bucks (or finding a torrent...) And it has a ton of functionality for editing which can come in handy.

I vote for Solid Converter PDF. It's very accurate. There's a free trial if you want to try it before you buy it at soliddocuments(dot)com.
