Work experience and job change query. [#permalink] New post 23 Dec 2011, 03:35
I need some inputs on my situation about work experience and job change in the middle of applications from you guys.

I will be joining a new company by Feb. end and will be applying to R2 schools in January 1st week. I am changing my job from technical role to 'sells+technical consultant' role. The profile is pretty good and hence I wish to join it now and it is my backup option if I don't get into B-school this season.

1. Should I mention this to adcom and in my resume?
2. Would it look bad, in the sense that I am not sure about my goals of joining a b-school?
3. I have been wait-listed at a B-school. Should I mention them that I intend to change my job and role from X to Y company, since in my resume I have written that I will be with company X till August 2012.

Appreciate your help and thoughts. :)

You're in a bit of a tough situation. In general you definitely want to have a clear plan for your career development and how the MBA will accelerate/enable you to get there.

A couple of questions:
1) How much work experience do you have already?
2) Why did you switch jobs? Strategic move? Unemployed?

The hard thing is you will need to explain to the committee why you switched jobs and why it is a good thing to go to B-School so soon after switching. I personally don't believe anyone can learn a whole lot in a new position over a year, or really make an impact at least. This exact notion is what you'll need to dissuade the adcom from, maybe you plan to return to this same company after B-School, maybe they fully support your decision to attend and want you to come back etc.

Regardless, if you mention switching jobs you will need to lay out how it is/was a strategic move (And it hopefully is, i.e. don't lie :) ) that requires you to earn an MBA.

If you have enough experience w/o the new job you could not mention it, but remember, they will probably want your direct supervisor's recommendation, and that could be awkward if your old boss or colleague mentions you leaving/being let go and you don't know until you're in for the interview.

Depending on your feedback, I may suggest waiting a year or two before going. It really depends on you and where you are in your career.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for reply.

1. I have 4 years of experience - technical.
2. Move is strategic. My new role is technical consultation+sales+handling clients directly and one-to-one. (So more responsibility and exposure etc.)

This job is my 'back-up' in case I don't get into MBA this year. I think adcom would not look at it as a negative having a backup option.

Why change now?
It's anyway hard to change role and industry and I don't want to let this opportunity go.

1. If it a) fits in with your stated short and long term goals b) will be perceived as a better position, yes. If not, no.
2. Not if you attack things head on, and MAKE it fit with your goals.
3. If it fills the two conditions in 1., yep
