Work Experience-Engineer [#permalink]

I am currently a civil engineer looking to obtain an MBA from a top program and change to a career outside the field of engineering. I will have 3 years experience by the time I begin my MBA. My concern is that I do not have enough work experience. Is this as big an issue when the main goal is to change professions? I am also concerned that because of the way civil engineering works, I have not gained much leadership to demonstrate in my applications. There really are no promotion opportunities until one receives their PE, which requires at least 5 years of experience and the passing of a professional exam. One must bide their time in a more technical role before they can project manage. Since I want to get out of engineering as soon as possible, I really do not want to waste more time in a career I do not like and take another test just to gain more work experience in a field I do not want to be in. Can anyone offer me any advice?

Get leadership experience in a non-profit, at church, local school, your condo association, election campaign, local food bank...
