Hi,
Anyone here who got accepted in a business schools working in a family business?
Its a completely different ball game for folks who've been working in a family business, most of us have been working since High school or even work in these businesses while having a full time job - to sell that story has its own challenges. It'll be nice to connect with folks in the same situation.
Oh, we have helped a LOT of family business folks.
What are the secrets?
No secrets really.
They like success. They like BIG. They like leadership. They like CONCRETE achievements. And they like candidates which show great potential.
Hope this helps,
And feel free to drop a line with some details and we can figure this out specifically for your case,
Best,
JF
Hey Thanks for the reply, I just felt out of place cause every profile I read seemed to be someone with a managerial experience.
I honestly dont even know if adcoms count a family business as experience.
So here goes
Academics:
Bachelors Businesses administration (Hons) 2.71 - I know horrible.
from a uni in Pakistan
Masters in Science in Management
University of Sheffield - Merit (Around 3.33 US GPA scale)
Had distinctions in pretty much all quant n research subjects
Extra Curricular:
Office bearer at many student bodies
organised everything from concerts to seminars
Public speaker since school, acknowledged nationally and internationally.
Hobbyist travel photographer with a huge portfolio.
Work:
Technically I've been working with my father in a retail business since I was 15 years old.
By the time I came to start my undergrad though me and my father aligned ourselves with a brand in Singapore and we started manufacturing & marketing their products in Pakistan. It grew with time and today we're present across the country, have around 100 employees.
Since we grew from a small organisation, initially we couldn't hire professional people (an educated workforce is expensive in Pakistan) so being the only one in office with a business school college degree (initially atleast) I was actively doing everything from marketing, to product design to liason with suppliers in China & Singapore.
Things settled down and I went for my masters in england after my undergrad.
When I got back from England, the board decided I need hands on experience in larger organisations so I got a job at multinational Ad agency and dealt with clients like Unilever, Shell, Kraft Foods etc. I resigned after 8 months as I felt I felt the business needed me more. Have been working fulltime in the family business have around 14 months of post grad work experience ( by the time I start MBA it'll be more than 24 months)
We are planning on adding more products and expanding internationally and for that an MBA is very important.
I have recommendations from the CEO of the brand from Singapore.
Another recommendation letter from the ad agency I worked in
I honestly don't know if the adcoms will take my work experience as an undergrad into account or if they'll even believe me.
just scared i guess.
Haven't given GMAT btw will be giving it on Dec 17th
So yea thats my profile.
