Working for different companies before my MBA [#permalink]

Hello,

I am hoping someone can give me some guidance on how many companies are to many companies before my MBA.

I work in the Automotive Industry and hold a degree in Economics and Applied Statistics. I was fortunate enough to work for a company between 2008-2011 that allowed me to forecast automotive sales and production, build vehicle life cycle models, and develop some basic skills which are unique to the automotive industry. However, since 2011 I have been recruited every 6-8 months by a new company for a bump in salary and title.

Currently, I am working for my third company, and am in the process of being recruited by a fourth. Are four job changes okay to schools like, HBS, Michigan, Virginia, Northwestern, and Duke, if every job change I have an increase in salary, and an increase in responsibility, or should I stay at my current position and wait until post MBA for my next job jump?

To give you some more background I am 27 years old, oversee consumer analytics and research for a Automotive Company, and graduated from the University of Michigan.

I look forward to everyone's help

GeorgeA023,
Only 6-8 months with each company won't look good, but if you explain the 'forward momentum' each move represented and how each rounded out your skills and followed your pre-MBA play book, then, assuming the rest of your app is strong, it won't be a deal-breaker. It also depends on how closely related the four companies were in terms of your position and industry. If they were all automotive companies that would dampen the 'job-hopping' onus somewhat. I hesitate to advise you to stay at a job you don't love just for the sake of a business school admissions offer that may not materialize, but there's no doubt moving to the fourth company would increase the likelihood that you will be perceived as a job-hopper (again noting that that label is not necessarily the kiss of death).

I would say it all depends on the story you tell. I mean if you are always being recruited for better positions and salaries and you just can't turn down the offer because they are too good, ho can that ever be bad??

Just make sure they KNOW that (meaning: write it in your essays!!)

Otherwise, I always tell folks: Don't think about your MBA when you make job decisions... do what's best for you, and then you can deal with what actually happened later, in the stories you present.
