Working simultaneously and independently at an identical constant rate, 4 machines of a certain type can produce a total of x units of product P in 6 days. How many of these machines, working simultaneously and independently at this constant rate, can produce a total of 3x units of product P in 4 days?

a) 24
b)18
c)16
d) 12
e)8

4 machines can do the job in 6 days
1 machine can do the job in 24 days

1 machine can do 3 jobs in 72 days

72 days is 18 times more than 4 days

18 machines do 3 jobs in 4 days

For this question, we can work out the no. of units per day per machine.

4 machines, x units in 6 days ---> \(\frac{\frac{x}{6}}{4}\) = \(\frac{x}{24}\) unit-day per machine
Thus, with 3x units over 4 days ---> \(\frac{3x}{4}\) divided by \(\frac{x}{24}\) gives us 18 machines

Ans: B (18)
