answer choice A isn't correct because the verb tenses change from present (not only did it CREATE...) to past (and GAVE).

pay attention to the fact that the first half of the sentence talks about positive things (farmland created, cheap houses/furniture) while the second half of the sentence talks about negative things (erosion, deforestation). because of that, the "not only... but" format doesn't fit here. "not only... but" is when you're making an additional point that compounds on top of the first part of the sentence. here, the second part contrasts with the first part, so the best format is that of answer D.

i had thought that whenever "but also" was used, "not only" would be needed as part of the idiom rule. guess not. thanks for the explanation.
