Can I solve this without the quadratic equation?

is this part of a problem? I quickly used QE and found 3+/- sqrt(6). plugin is pretty much out of the question although you could make educated range of result - the answer between 5 and 6 since if you plugin 5 you get -2 and plugin 6 you get 3. It really depends on the question.
