(1) x
(2)0.007

A) (1) is bigger
b) (2) is bigger
c) (1) and (2) are equal
d) Relationship can't be determined

I don't seem to understand how to go about cracking this question.

I don't believe that such q's appear on GMAT.
What is the source ?

Yeah, it's GRE question. I am looking for a way to solve it; any help is greatly appreciated.

Ok . I would go with option D .
Cause they have just mentioned dat x and y are decimals.
We do not know whether they are positv negative . Either which way let us take a few cases .

Case 1 :
If x = 0.007 and y = 0.0001
-》 x + y = 0.0071
X + y rounded to the hundredth placs it gives 0.007 which is x
Hence x = 0.007
You can choose option (C)

Case 2 :
X = 0.006 and y = 0.0001
X+y = 0.0061
Rounded off gives 0.006 which is = x
Hence you could choose option (B)

With jus two cases we get varying answers.

So we need more info to know what precise values of x and y are we allowed to take .

Hence d qns would be option (D)
