You cannot divide by zero. Hence if x = 0, you cannot cancel.

Curly, look at it this way:

xz = xy implies xz-xy=0

or x*(z-y) = 0 which means that either x=0 or z-y=0

Therefore, z=y is the unique solution only for non-zero values of x. Therefore, you cannot simply cancel x on both sides in your equation
