Y has been believed to cause Z. A new report, noting that Y and Z are often observed to be preceded by X, suggests that X, not Y, may be the cause of Z.
Which of the following further observations would best support the new report’s suggestion?
(A) In cases where X occurs but Y does not, X is usually followed by Z.
(B) In cases where X occurs, followed by Y, Y is usually followed by Z.
(C) In cases where Y occurs but X does not, Y is usually followed by Z.
(D) In cases where Y occurs but Z does not, Y is usually preceded by X.
(E) In cases where Z occurs, it is usually preceded by X and Y.

The answer is A. The news reports claim X as cause for Z , but the belief is Y is the cause to Z. A suggests that X occurs followed by Z and Y doesnt occur at all which clearly supports the argument that X can be the root cause of Z instead of the belief that Y is.

Answer looks A to me as well

A- In cases where X occurs but Y does not, X is usually followed by Z
X is occuring and Y is not ,i.e. X-> Z

A, best supports the hypothesis, because if y doesn't happen but Z is preceded by X, then suggest that X might caused Z instead of Y

OK, this one now.

Y has been believed to cause Z. A new report, noting that Y and Z are often observed to be preceded by X, suggests that X, not Y, may be the cause of Z.

So we need to find the case where X ---> Z not Y.

A is what we are looking for.
Happy to discuss

Cheers!

We know that before the report it was
The report suggests that
X leads to Z and not Y.

(A) In cases where X occurs but Y does not, X is usually followed by Z.--- CORRECT, the answer choice clearly shows that X leads to Z because Y does not occur and still X is followed by Z.
(B) In cases where X occurs, followed by Y, Y is usually followed by Z.--- No information about whether X or Y leads to Z. Incorrect.
(C) In cases where Y occurs but X does not, Y is usually followed by Z.--- Incorrect, because the answer choice suggest Y leads to Z. But we want X leads to Z.
(D) In cases where Y occurs but Z does not, Y is usually preceded by X.---- Incorrect, because Only gives information that Y is preceded by X. Also implies that neither Y nor X leads to Z.
(E) In cases where Z occurs, it is usually preceded by X and Y.--- Again no info about which out of X or Y leads to Z.
