Yale vs Duke for Joint MBA/MEM [#permalink] New post 20 Feb 2014, 09:30
Hi everyone!

I have been accepted to both Duke and Yale MBA programs as well as the Duke Nicholas School of the Environment for the MEM (environmental management) joint degree with Fuqua. Yale has not released the Forestry School decisions yet, so I'm not sure if I'm in, but I applied to the joint degree with SOM. I would love some insight into which of these schools is stronger for someone wanting to pursue CSR or environmental work with consumer goods! I love both schools and am at a loss of what to do. I'm also not interested in moving back to NYC after graduation so being close to the city I don't think is that important to me (unless environmental companies still recruit in nyc?)

YALE:
Pros
- Beautiful Campus, amazing new building
- Affordable living and housing
- Close to some of my family
- strong integrated culture btwn FES and SOM, as well as highest percentage of joint degree students at any b school
- extremely friendly students
- Yale brand
- Access to rest of Yale university, many students take advantage of classes at Law School and college
-International Experience and stress on globalization, which will probably play a huge role in corporate management in the coming years (so i expect)
-Proficient is sufficient!
- good alumni network

Cons
- weather!
- I was looking to live on my own, but it looks like most students dont do that
- not as 'prestigious' as either the undergraduate college or Fuqua, fell in almost all of the b-school rankings except FT
- lots of married folks... I'm single.
- I actually like getting grades. I know it's weird.

DUKE
Pros
- weather!!
- amazing sports culture
- team fuqua
- social life
- Love the quarter system
- Better ranked b school
-amazing alumni network

Cons
- Nicholas and Fuqua students don't seem to interact that much, and they live far apart
-not as supportive of an environment for joint degree students, would have to manage a lot on my own
- apartments are more expensive if i want to live on my own, and while station 9 is beautiful it's right next to a highway.
- maybe too much of a social life? when I went for BDW I couldn't imagine partying that much (even though I did in college) while still getting work done
- I heard Nic school isn't as good as FES

Just by reading your Pros/Cons list for both schools, you seem to fit more at Fuqua, so my very biased opinion says pick Duke :)

I think it comes down to whether you value the integrated nature of FES/SOM more than the robust social scene/sports culture at Duke. While, both schools offers you amazing academics and recruiting opportunities, I think Fuqua's quarter system is a big plus as you can take lot more electives.

ps. During BDW, I met at least three people who were undecided b/w Yale and Duke, so I am sure you are not the only one making this tough tough decision. You cannot go wrong either way, but you sure will have more fun in Durham!

Hope to see you at the April BDW!

Couple of factual things:
1) Yale is also on the quarter system.
2) Plenty of people live on their own.
3) There aren't letter grades, but we are "graded" in our own way. The system is distinction (top 10%), proficient (majority), pass (no set number), and fail.
4) What's wrong with married people? ;)

Just to speak to the FES/SOM connection. I can't say enough how wonderful the joint degree students are. They are some of my favorite people at Yale. I think half of them are going on my international experience to Indonesia, and I'm so excited!

You're in an interesting position because you have to evaluate each individual program and then its relationship to the other. I'd see if I could be put in touch with people who are joints at both schools. The thing I'll say about Yale is that the joint degrees are a really tight-knit crew. A lot of them seem to be heading to the Bay Area after school, if that's at all relevant.

Hi Elisej09,

I'm wondering - What did you end up deciding and how is it going? I just found out that I was accepted to SOM and may be in the same situation if accepted to Duke. I'm generally interested in habitat and wildlife conservation. Thanks!

Ahhhh yes, that was obvious! Thanks for pointing that out.

I'd still be curious to learn about elisej09's reasoning for the decision, and how they have found the joint degree program and culture.
