Yesterday Diana spent a total of 240 minutes attending a training class, responding to E-mails, and talking on the phone. If she did no two of these three activities at the same time, how much time did she spend talking on the phone?
(1) Yesterday the amount of time that Diana spent attending the training class was 90 percent of the amount of time that she spent responding to E-mails.
(2) Yesterday the amount of time that Diana spent attending the training class was 60 percent of the total amount of time that she spent responding to E-mails and talking on the phone.

C for me.

If t is time spent on class, e on emails and p on phone, then
t + e + p = 240. We need to find out p.

stmt 1 says that t = 0.9e. This gives the equation as 1.9e + p = 240. We cannot find p and hence insufficient.

stmt2 says that t = 0.6(e+p) and hence from the original equation, 1.6(e+p) = 240 or e + p = 150. Again, insufficient.

Combining stmt1 and 2,, we can find out p. Hence, sufficient.

Answer is C.

let a+b+c = 240
to find: c?

1) a=0.9 b
=> 1.9b+c=240
insufficient.
2) a=0.6(b+c)
=> b+c=240/1.6
insufficient

Combining both 1&2, we've 2 different eq & 2 different variables. We can solve for c.

Any tips on how to approach such problems? I was thrown off by the following wording in the question "If she did no two of these three activities at the same time"

Reading and re-reading helps me understand word problems better. Also, I have observed that such "if" conditions only simplifies the scope of the problem. For example, in this problem what it tries to say is that Diana did not do two things together. Imagine, if this was not mentioned, then there would be different interpretations by different people.

at+re+tp=240
tp=?

1) at=90/100 * re => this does not solve for tp
2)at=60/100 * (re+tp) => does not solve for tp

combine both we can solve in terms of tp and find tp
