I am not sure , but i will pick E cause it says " because they desire to be ", which sounds right

Can someone clarify why the usage of "they" in D has a clear referent while the usage in E doesn't.

In (I think) "they" can refer to eating habits or the ballet dancers.

I select D.
D clearly links "because of their desire to be as thin as possible" to you ballet dancers
E does not do that.

I thought "they" is refering to "ballet dancers" or "gymnasts" or both of them together.
