Some, but not all

I took mbaMission's boot camp last summer and applied to schools this past winter. It was really a fantastic experience! Breaking it down...

There were three main reasons I took the boot camp:

1. I didn't know what an MBA essay should look / read like. I work in entertainment (TV production) and have some background in creative writing, but I wanted to make sure I was putting my best foot forward with these essays and wasn't coming across too vague or artsy.

2. I was really intimidated by the price tags I was seeing for one-on-one consulting services, and the boot camp seemed like a great deal!

3. I had the pleasure of meeting Angela at a couple of events through the Forte Foundation and knew that I had to jump at any opportunity to work with her in a small-group setting.

I really LOVED my experience with the boot camp! Another numbered list:

1. Right off the bat, you get a bunch of really wonderful written resources from mbaMission that help you brainstorm, identify and construct stories, polish your resume, and even work with recommenders.

2. The group is small enough that everyone participates, and you get the individual feedback that I feel like we're all hungry for. You get some feedback on your work during the call, and we had homework after the call that we reviewed individually with Angela. We had to draft an essay and list potential stories for other essay topics, and we got individual feedback on all of it. So awesome.

3. I learned what an MBA application should look like. There is a method to the madness and a structure that adcoms recognize and understand. Especially as a non-traditional candidate, I wanted to make sure that my application made sense to them and that I was communicating my skills and experiences in a way that they would understand. The methods I learned for essay-writing and resume polishing really helped with that.

4. This boot camp made me get my butt in gear! Angela makes you write during the boot camp, like live during the webinar. I was really nervous about the essays and was TOTALLY procrastinating, but I was forced to start writing in class, and it really helped make the essays seem less intimidating.

5. Angela is awesome!! Seriously, she's so great. She also knows a whole lot about storytelling and screenwriting, so if you don't have a lot of experience telling stories, she's an amazing asset. For me, as someone working in entertainment, was wonderful to work with someone who knows about my industry.

So, this is a long review, BUT I do want to tell you guys how my admit process is going so far. I applied to five schools (Stanford, Kellogg, Anderson, Stern, and McCombs) and have been accepted with significant scholarships to Kellogg and Anderson, have an offer from McCombs, and have an interview invitation from NYU.

For me, this workshop was the start to a months-long process of introspection and intense MBA application grind. And it was the RIGHT start to that process. This class touches on all aspects of your application, from understanding the adcom to building your goals, to of course essays and resumes, which are the main focus. I found it so valuable, especially since you do get individual attention from your instructor.

I hope this review was helpful, and good luck to you during your MBA journey!! You got this!

Some, but not all

I took the online bootcamp in Dec 2011. The program is designed for working professionals with a 8-11PM EST schedule for 4 sessions. Although there is an onsite version in certain cities, I felt that the online format had its own advantages in perhaps letting us share freely with each other, which was very helpful for some of the exercises and exchanging feedback. The software/website used for the class is like a more fun version of Webex.

For the first three sessions, we covered:
-Overall application process, what schools are looking for. There were only 6 students in my bootcamp so we had plenty of opportunities to ask individual questions. I think we all overlapped on some schools anyway.
-Essays: the meat of the course. Types of essays, brainstorming and organization, storytelling methods, do's and don'ts, critiques and samples.
-resumes
Exercises accompanied the topics. For example, we would think of memorable life experiences to share to demonstrate story elements. We also spent a few minutes here and there to write sample excerpts, beginnings, endings, and resume elements.
I might have left out some topics but these were the ones I focused on.

The fourth session was scheduled a week after the third and was slotted for 1:1 private essay critiques with each of us. We sent Angela our essays along with some other homework before the last session.

The instructor Angela really shed some light on the essays for me. Toward the end, she let us bring up any non-traditional essay questions that stumped us and we explored it together with the class under her guidance. These exercises sewed the seeds for what would develop in my head over the next few days. Without them, I would likely have written many throw-away drafts before achieving any similar coherence and depth.

Angela was an energetic and fun instructor who knew how to respond individually to each of our styles to bring out our stories. She offered to hang around after every class for extra questions at after 11PM her time. Her enjoyment of teaching and helping came through every session. I didn't know about this beforehand but you can sign up for a 30min free consultation with MBAmission and request Angela if you'd like to chat with her first and ask about the program.

Overall Value:
In addition to the course, we got the MBAmission application guide book and our choice of one detailed school report. Combined with 9 hours of class time and a 1:1 essay review, the total value for the price of roughly two application fees was an easy choice for me. I recommend it without hesitation, especially with Angela, whether you're just starting the application process or are only weeks from deadlines like I was.

As an individual applying without anyone in my network to have gone through the MBA application process, I would highly recommend this service.

Each webinar easily broke down one section of the process to keep it from being overwhelming. Angela Guido's sense of humor made the process a little fun at the same time.

I think the greatest strength of the service was the deliverables that were recommended after each section. It was helpful to learn what a good MBA resume looked like and then go off to create one.

Overall I anticipate this will save me tons of time by investing in this service early.

This review is specifically for the Exploring Your Experiences document provided by mbaMission. Applying to business school is ALLLL about knowing yourself, your strengths, your experiences and your goals. The document is long and requires a lot of time but after finishing it, it has been instrumental in both resume, essay writing, and even chats with alumni and adcoms. DO IT! You will thank yourself later. Lastly, Angela from mbaMission is AWESOME. She has a very warm and welcoming personally which makes it easy to share your experience. She will also be very candid and let you know what you should and should not do when applying. Her advice has really changed the way I approach the application for each school.

Angela was by far the highlight of my Forte MBA Launch experience. She led several of the Forte webinars, and also led the Forte kick-off launch session in Houston, TX. I really enjoyed her personal branding session, where we engaged in practice around how to present ourselves in interviews. We practiced discussing successes and failures we had experienced. She pushed us to craft attention-grabbing, detailed, and nuanced descriptions of ourselves and let us know that now was the time to own our successes and failures. Beyond the Forte webinars and sessions, I also had a 30-minute phone consultation with her. At that point, I was unsure if an MBA was the right path for me, and she gave me individualized advice pertaining to my specific situation. After this conversation, I left with a better sense of what the right path for me was. Thank you for your advice, Angela!

It seems like every single time I hit a wall in the application process - is my resume format okay? are my bullet points impressive enough? do my goals make sense? how do I even begin tackling these essays? - there was an mbaMission webinar session that gave real, non-cliche, productive advice. They were reading my mind. Not only did Angela expertly address the toughest questions but she also provided clear tools and methods for thinking through all of them. I walked away with a clear strategy and increased confidence. I highly recommend checking out the MBA bootcamp, including the Resume Protocol below. Thanks Angela!

Kept me on my toes!

As a marketing and branding nerd, I've always been fairly well in tune with how I've conveyed my personal brand. My resume has always been up to date, LinkedIn on point, and I've worked on creating value for others through my strong network. Or so I thought...

After an hour long consultation with Angela on my resume, I realized just how much work I had ahead of me. Even in that short time, Angela was able to challenge my thinking and get me to see the benefits of truly starting to break down my resume and build it back up -- and as someone who is fairly headstrong, this is not an easy feat. She gave strategic advice on how to frame the resume and supported that feedback with some great tactics on how to ensure each bullet on the resume tells a story. I certainly saw the light by the end of the conversation!

Not only was this one-on-one advice incredibly helpful (my resume is in a MUCH better place), she has some ridiculously helpful documents to assist in the MBA process. The Explore Your Experiences document is something that has guided my entire MBA process and has even helped me realize area for personal + professional growth before even entering an MBA program. This document was a great thought starter, and I'm definitely referencing daily as I craft my essays now.

Finally - her essay advice was some of the most valuable guidance that I've received throughout the application process. She provides incredible guidance on how to ensure the essay conveys another facet of what makes a candidate a little more unique or interesting. Of the blogs, forums, webinars, I've seen so far - Angela's was far and away the most strategic, relevant, and insightful.

I honestly can't say enough about the support and guidance Angela has provided. She has an incredible knack for being able to challenge your thinking & assumptions, in the best way possible! I'm a huge fan and certainly grateful for the opportunity to learn from her!

The advice I have gotten from Angela has been really monumental. I think the thing that different from other coaches is that her BS attitude that is not all snarky and uptight like other programs or coaches I have experienced.

The thing I appreciate most is that she really does help you present the best version of yourself. For me, I went into this "wanting help getting in" but really got the help I needed to actually know myself and my goals well enough to be ready for business school, so this really went beyond the application process for me.. Yes, it is about getting in, but that is almost a side impact of really truly knowing who you are, what you want to do, and how to convey that well, and Angela is really the best person to help you do that.

Through the Forte MBA Launch program, I worked with Angela through a series of workshops - self-awareness, storytelling, MBA resume protocol, career game plan, and essay writing tips.

All her workshops have been very insightful and helpful. Time and time you will hear again that the MBA process is quite rewarding as you get to learn more about yourself. However, introspection is not easy. Angela made this challenge easier to tackle with her self-awareness workshop. If you use this effectively, it really will set the stage for our application process (post GMAT).

I walked away from each session with digestible and actionable information. I knew what steps I needed to take to use her advice. I found this as key because it's not easy transform all the advice into next steps, but Angela did a great job.

Before I engaged with Angela, I was set on my GMAT. One of my only worries has been essay writing (or storytelling as she'll tell you) and these workshops have given me a great tool kit to rely on.

The Boot Camp is a great way to kick start your application process and Angela's passion to truly help you will only enhance your journey.

I attended these sessions through the Forte Foundation and found Angela's feedback and insight to be invaluable for the admissions process. She was honest and straightforward about perceptions and preparing your best possible application, while still managing to be encouraging.

Angela's exercises in reflection are not easy (notably: Exploring Your Experiences!) but they truly prepared me to think about the "hows", "whats ", and "whys" of getting a b-school education. The exercises have helped me not only to prepare my essays but to be more deliberate in my current role, seeking projects that will aid me in my goals.

I would recommend this program without reservation to anyone looking to maximize their odds of admissions OR for anyone who is unsure of their goals and their attainability.
