The Rice (Jones School of Business) Full-Time MBA
The Jesse H. Jones School of Business at Rice University is located in Houston, Texas – the United States’ fourth most populated city known across the country for its production of oil, natural gas, and other energy sources like wind and solar power. Like Houston, the Jones School of Business is also growing in size and prestige. While the school offers approximately 110 seats per year for MBA applicants, it saw a 31.4% increase in applicants in 2011, allowing Jones to lower its acceptance rate from 36% in 2010 to 25% and making Jones both more selective and more competitive.
Jones’ full-time MBA program consists of core courses in management and business, the Action Learning Project, and a choice of specialization. The Action Learning Project is a unique process whereby after a student’s first year completion of core courses, they are assigned to a top company local to Houston to observe business practices and to give insight and recommendations on improving practices. Companies that have participated in Jones’ Action Learning Project include J.P. Morgan Chase Healthcare, Continental Airlines, and Savage Design, to name a few. Upon completion of core curriculum, students are given the option to pursue a concentration. While a concentration is not required for graduation, it may be desirable to gain specialized knowledge to make one more appealable to a particular job sector. There are 10 concentrations available including energy, accounting, health care, and management consulting.
One of the main draws of the Jones MBA program is its size. Each year, only 110 applicants enroll in the program, and for each class the staff to student ratio is approximately 1 to 9. This ratio makes the program especially intimate and small – a learning environment where everyone knows each other and, most importantly, care about one another’s progress and goals.
Upon graduation, 94% of Jones MBA graduates had been employed, with 69% of the employment having been facilitated by Rice University. The majority of students, 40%, were employed in the petroleum and energy sector, followed by 19% in consulting services, and 12% in financial services. Because the U.S. Bureau of Statistics identified Houston in 2013 as the #1 city for job creation in the United States, the vast majority, 91%, of Rice MBA graduates chose to stay in the Southwest region for employment as well.
