Learning is a process that continues throughout one’s career, and University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business is taking a step into the area of lifelong learning.

This week, the school unveiled its new Sands Institute for Lifelong Learning, drawing on a $68 million gift Frank Sands made to the school in May 2019.

The Sands Institute will contribute to the development of Darden offerings targeted at professionals across their careers.

That will include creating new courses provided through Darden’s Executive Education and Lifelong Learning program. It will also mean building new degree programs intended for working professionals.

Since lifelong learning depends on teaching, part of the Sands Institute’s mission will be to support Darden faculty. In that vein, the institute has already awarded endowed professorships to five Darden faculty.

The five recipients include a professor of practice, two associate professors, and two professors, many of whom have been extensively involved in the school’s Executive Education and Executive MBA programs.

Darden’s vision for lifelong version also includes learning opportunities for the school’s alumni. Darden says that the Sands Institute intends to build on a pilot program allowing every graduate to participate in one of the school’s Executive Education and Lifelong Learning offerings for free in 2020.

According to Frank Sands, whose donation led to the creation of the Sands Institute,“business people need to reskill throughout life.” Sands emphasized that “leaders must be able to continually grow, learn and develop to create positive change.”

Thus, Sands explained that he hoped his gift would make it possible to “share the possibilities of lifelong learning with Darden students for many years to come.”

Ashley Williams, who head the Sands Institute, commented that it was “thrilling to see the early impact of Frank Sands’ gift beginning to take shape.”

Williams explained that the institute is “excited to continue to unleash innovation in this space, making Darden an indispensable lifelong learning partner for professionals and organizations across the globe.”

As the launch of the Sands Institute shows, top B-schools like Darden increasingly offer a range of degree and non-degree programs designed to meet the needs of professionals at different stages in their careers.
