A new scholarship program from University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business aims to promote diverse leadership in management.

The school’s newly announced Breakthrough Scholars Program will award merit-based scholarships to students pursuing careers in asset management, including venture capital, private equity and other areas.

Besides the scholarship award, recipients will have access to a range of opportunities for networking, mentoring, education and professional development.

Together, the benefits that come with the Breakthrough Scholars Program are intended to provide “an advantage for elite women and outstanding under-represented racial minorities launching careers in private equity, venture capital and related fields,” according to Darden professor and Breakthrough Scholars adviser Greg Fairchild.

The Breakthrough Scholars Program joins a number of other Darden initiatives related to asset management, many of which are part of the school’s Mayo Center for Asset Management.

For example, Darden students interested in asset management can participate in the Darden Capital Management Fund, a student-run fund which recently saw its assets reach $15 million.

With its latest scholarship addition, though, Darden looks to make progress on a widely acknowledged lack of diversity in the area of asset management.

As the school points out in its announcement, a 2020 report from McKinsey found that 1 in 5 senior leaders at private equity firms in the US are women while less than 12 percent are people of color.

Darden MBA alum, founder of an asset management firm, and former Darden trustee Elizabeth Weymouth said that “developing a pipeline of diverse MBA talent to join private equity firms is essential for the long-term sustainability of the industry.”

She described the Breakthrough Scholar Program as “an important new initiative” toward that goal.

According to Darden, the program will name up to 12 Breakthrough Scholars annually. Both full-time MBA students and Executive MBA students are eligible for the first cohort, with students expressing interest as part of their MBA or EMBA application.

Scholarship opportunities add another layer to the MBA admissions process. Gaining admission to a top MBA program like Darden requires having a compelling personal brand that stands out, and that’s doubly true when it comes to being competitive for scholarships.
