{"id":1230,"date":"2009-09-17T12:22:20","date_gmt":"2009-09-17T20:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2009-12-30T15:26:41","modified_gmt":"2009-12-30T23:26:41","slug":"fit-in-stand-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/fit-in-stand-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Fit In, Stand Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It may seem like a contradiction, but an effective EMBA application strategy will simultaneously make you stand out as an applicant and show how you fit with the program in question.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a mid-level manager at a global IT company, or an entrepreneur whose enterprise is on the verge of growing beyond your capacity to manage with ingenuity alone, you can safely assume that there will be many other applicants with your broad profile.\u00a0 In fact, most applicants will be in a group that is reasonably well represented.\u00a0 If the school will only accept 30% of these groups of applicants, you want to make sure you\u2019re in that 30%.\u00a0 You have to make yourself stand out \u2013 within that professional group.\u00a0 This \u201cstand out\u201d factor should be connected to your goals in some way for a coherent overall message.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example.\u00a0 You\u2019re a division marketing manager in a global consumer products corporation.\u00a0 Your stand-out factor is creating and integrating into the marketing process a rigorous analytic tool that is now used across domains, allowing meaningful comparison for the first time, and that is also \u201cuser friendly\u201d for less quantitatively inclined product marketing managers.\u00a0 Your demonstration of combined creativity and analytic rigor will be a great platform for your goal to become a senior manager in business development.<\/p>\n<p>For some applicants, such as the hypothetical division marketing manager above, fitting in will happen naturally.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve had less business exposure or are in an uncommon industry or role \u2013 perhaps you\u2019re a doctor taking on a heavier management role in a hospital or a lawyer doing likewise at a law firm \u2013 you must incorporate \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/acceptedcom_blog\/2007\/8\/2\/the-elusive-fit-factor.html\">fit<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 more forcefully into your strategy.\u00a0 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/acceptedcom_blog\/2007\/8\/5\/fit-factor-part-two.html\">Fit<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 will mean presenting a business perspective and framework.\u00a0 On the other hand, more naturally than the business managers and entrepreneurs, you will stand out.\u00a0 Take advantage of that stand-out quality in your essays, by giving intriguing views of your industry through your examples and anecdotes.<\/p>\n<p>Your goals are part of the fit-in, stand-out message.\u00a0 You should carry your distinctive perspective through in your goals discussion.\u00a0 As the marketing manager above, you\u2019d provide vivid examples of how these qualities will benefit you as a leader of business development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary: <\/strong>Understand how you fit in and how you stand out, and where you might need to work to demonstrate fit or distinction in your application strategy.<\/p>\n<p><em>To learn more tips from the pros on applying to the EMBA program of your dreams, buy Accepted\u2019s new ebook, <\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/Ecommerce\/mba\/EMBAEssay.aspx\">The EMBA Edge: A Guide to EMBA Admissions<\/a> now!
