{"id":12524,"date":"2012-06-25T02:57:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T09:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=12524"},"modified":"2013-02-20T17:14:57","modified_gmt":"2013-02-21T00:14:57","slug":"mba-admissions-mit-sloan-and-entrepreneurship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/mba-admissions-mit-sloan-and-entrepreneurship\/","title":{"rendered":"MBA Admissions: MIT Sloan and Entrepreneurship"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_12527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12527\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/MITSloan.aspx\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12527 \" title=\"Stata Center at MIT\" src=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Stata-Center-at-MIT.jpg\" alt=\"Stata Center at MIT\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stata Center at MIT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>A quick glance at<\/em><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/MITSloan.aspx\"><em>MIT<\/em><\/a><em>: MIT currently ranks in fourth place as one of the best business schools, according to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-business-schools\/mba-rankings\">US News &amp; World Report<\/a><em> <\/em><em>(March 2012). <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-business-schools\/entrepreneurship-rankings\"><em>For entrepreneurship<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em><em> it is also ranked at number four. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Incoming Sloanies and Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The class of 2012 entered MIT Sloan with an average of five years of work experience, an undergraduate GPA of 3.5, and a GMAT score of 717.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mba\/student-experience\/class-profile\/\">4% of class of 2013<\/a> students entered MIT with entrepreneurial backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MIT's Classes Related to Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a school motto of \"Mens et Manu,\" or \"Mind and Hand,\" it's no wonder that entrepreneurship plays such a central role in the MIT academic ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>MIT Sloan's five core courses are all taken during the first semester, along with one elective course. The <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mba\/program-components\/\">core structure<\/a> \"provides the foundation of freedom and flexibility you need to pursue your personal goals and interests throughout the rest of your time at MIT Sloan.\" Students interested in specializing in entrepreneurship will embark on the <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mba\/program-components\/special-tracks-dual-degrees\/entrepreneurship-and-innovation-track\/\">Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation (E&amp;I) Track<\/a>. When they complete their studies, they will receive an <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/ei\/ei-certificate-requirements\">Entrepreneurship &amp; Innovation Certificate<\/a> in addition to their MBA.<\/p>\n<p>In the first semester, along with the core courses, E&amp;I Track students will also take <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15360-introduction-technological-entrepreneurship\" target=\"_self\">Introduction to Technological Entrepreneurship<\/a>, led by the E&amp;I Track Chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/faculty\/edward-b-roberts\" target=\"_self\">Professor Edward Roberts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, during the Sloan Innovation Period in the spring, E&amp;I Track students will participate in the week-long <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/ei-study-tour-silicon-valley\">Silicon Valley Study Tour<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/faculty\/bill-aulet\">Bill Aulet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/about\/detail.php?in_spseqno=52212&amp;co_list=E\">Colin Kennedy<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/ei\/ei-certificate-requirements\">Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Second semester E&amp;I courses include <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15390-ab-new-enterprises\">New Enterprises<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/node\/315\"> Entrepreneurial Strategy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/node\/316\" target=\"_blank\">Strategic Management of Innovation and Entrepreneurship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/ei\/ei-certificate-requirements\">E&amp;I elective courses<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>H2 Corporate Entrepreneurship: Strategies for Technology-Based New Business Development<\/li>\n<li>Technology Sales &amp; Sales Management<\/li>\n<li>Early Stage Capital<\/li>\n<li>Basic Business Law for the Entrepreneur and Manager<\/li>\n<li>Design and Marketing New Products<\/li>\n<li>Social Entrepreneurship<\/li>\n<li>Managing in Adversity: The CEO Perspective<\/li>\n<li>Developmental Entrepreneurship<\/li>\n<li>The Analytical Edge<\/li>\n<li>The Business of Software and Digital Platforms<\/li>\n<li>How to Develop Breakthrough Products &amp; Services<\/li>\n<li>Strategic Decision Making in the Biomedical Business<\/li>\n<li>Disruptive Technologies: Predator or Prey?<\/li>\n<li>Technology Sales &amp; Sales Management<\/li>\n<li>Dilemmas in Founding New Ventures <em>(Also meets the MIT Sloan Leadership Requirement.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Entrepreneurial Finance<\/li>\n<li>Special Seminar in Law: Law and Cutting-Edge Technologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>E&amp;I students must also choose at least one of the following product-level courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15371j-innovation-teams\" target=\"_blank\">Innovation Teams: Commercializing Emerging Technologies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15783j-product-design-and-development\" target=\"_blank\">Product Design &amp; Development<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15366-energy-ventures\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Ventures<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15376j-media-lab-entrepreneurship-digital-innovations\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Innovations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15377j-linked-data-ventures-fall\" target=\"_blank\">Linked Data Ventures<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To reflect MIT Sloan's mission of hands-on learning, or \"Learning by doing,\" the program offers endless <a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/mba\/program-components\/hands-on-learning\/\">Action Learning<\/a> opportunities. The most prominent Action Learning feature is the Action Lab. Entrepreneurship students are required to complete one of the following two labs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15389-ab-global-entrepreneurship-lab\" target=\"_blank\">Global Entrepreneurship Lab<\/a> \u2013 Teams work with overseas companies, usually in developing economies and emerging markets.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/course\/15399-entrepreneurship-lab\" target=\"_blank\">Entrepreneurship Lab<\/a> \u2013 Sloan students work in teams with Science\/Engineering students on problem-solving projects with CEOs of emerging technology companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">E&amp;I Track students must also participate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/entrepreneurship.mit.edu\/main\/nurture\/entrepreneurial-competition\" target=\"_blank\">MIT $100K Business Plan Competition<\/a>, in at least one team over the course of their two years at Sloan.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Are you applying to Sloan?
