It\u2019s a thriving, and increasingly global, industry \u2013 and as a result numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/Zones\/bschools.aspx\">MBA programs<\/a> offer a specialization in sport management. (There are also sports management MA and MS programs \u2013 and some people return for a sports management MBA after a sports MA or MS.) A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-graduate-schools\/top-business-schools\/articles\/2011\/12\/22\/mba-is-mvp-of-sports-management-industry-some-say\" target=\"_blank\">December 2011 US News article<\/a> gives a thorough, succinct overview of the history of these programs and their current status. The article states that \u201calumni of the programs work in a variety of fields, from branding and marketing to working with sports apparel, and from college athletics to sports nonprofits.\u201d The article also cautions that not all sports management MBA programs are created equal; it\u2019s the top ones that will open doors to national level enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>Of those top programs, the following three reflect the great diversity, distinctive perspectives, and exciting opportunities in graduate-level sports management education:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lcb.uoregon.edu\/App_Aspx\/MbaHome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">University of Oregon, Charles H. Lundquist School of Business<\/a> \u2013 A centerpiece of this program is affiliation with the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lcb.uoregon.edu\/App_Aspx\/WsmcHome.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Warsaw Sports Marketing Center<\/a>, according to the website the \u201cthe leading think tank and training ground for the sports business industry.\u201d Students take ten core required basic MBA courses plus sports management track requirements and electives. Some of the required sports courses are \u201cLegal Aspects of Sports\u201d and \u201cSports Projects.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business.gwu.edu\/sportmba\/\" target=\"_blank\">George Washington University School of Business<\/a> \u2013 GWU offers the sports management MBA in three different formats: Global MBA (full-time), Professional MBA (self-paced, part-time), and Accelerated MBA (more intensive, fast-paced part-time program spanning 24 months). It addresses the marketing and management of athletes, teams, venues, franchises, and media. Its \u201cGreen Sports Scorecard\u201d introduces leaders in sustainable sports. Download the program\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/business.gwu.edu\/sportmba\/pdf\/sportmba.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">16-page PDF brochure<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-rohan.sdsu.edu\/%7Esmba\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego State University<\/a> \u2013 This is an \u201cintensive\u201d program \u201cfocused entirely on the international sports business\u201d with accelerated 18-month duration. An integral part of the program is an International Sports MBA Case Competition that involves a global sports consulting exercise and culminates in presentations to industry executives. The program also partners closely with the San Diego Padres; the team\u2019s executives often guest lecture, oversee team projects, and provide career guidance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A related program is <a href=\"https:\/\/ce.columbia.edu\/Sports-Management\" target=\"_blank\">Columbia University\u2019s M.S. in Sports Management<\/a>, a part-time program. It targets people who are already working in the sports industry in some capacity and wish advanced training in sports management, people with other professional degrees such as law who wish to expand into the sports industry, and retired athletes. The program features a basic core of MBA courses followed by sports-specific courses.
