Let\u2019s get right to business now talking about the 10 \u2018Don\u2019ts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2013\/12\/24\/dos-and-donts-for-writing-your-resume-part-1-the-9-dos\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-22147\" alt=\"To Be Yourself\" src=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/To-Be-Yourself-300x300.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/To-Be-Yourself-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/To-Be-Yourself-300x300-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>1) <strong>First and foremost, don\u2019t make things up<\/strong>. This includes inflating your accomplishments, your level of responsibility, or your skills. Besides the fact that it\u2019s dishonest, your resume reviewer may find out (like if he or she follows up on one of your references or does a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beatthegmat.com\/mba\/2010\/06\/28\/be-factual-how-to-avoid-trouble-during-an-mba-background-check\" target=\"_blank\">background check<\/a>) and then you\u2019ll be busted\u2026not to mention jobless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2) <strong>Don\u2019t turn your resume into an autobiography<\/strong>. Your resume will include biographical information, but its primary purpose is to focus on aspects of your life and career that make you an ideal b-school candidate and that address a potential employer\u2019s needs. Don\u2019t include information from high school or earlier.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3) <strong>Don\u2019t provide personal data<\/strong>. This includes marital status, age, height\/weight, race, religion, or any other non-work-related information. Besides the fact that it\u2019s irrelevant, it may also be used illegally to discriminate against you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4) <strong>Don\u2019t include a separate \u201cobjective\u201d line at the beginning of your resume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5) <strong>Don\u2019t use articles (\u201cthe,\u201d \u201ca\u201d) or pronouns (\u201cI,\u201d \u201cyou\u201d)<\/strong>. They waste precious space, detract from resume impact, and reduce professionalism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">6) <strong>Don\u2019t overuse a few <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2013\/09\/11\/personal-statement-tip-use-vivid-active-verbs\/\" target=\"_blank\">action words<\/a>.<\/strong> There are more words you can use besides \u201cled\u201d or \u201cdeveloped.\u201d Consider similar terms like \u201caccelerated,\u201d \u201cdelivered,\u201d \u201cestablished,\u201d \u201cimplemented,\u201d \u201cinitiated,\u201d or \u201creengineered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">7) <strong>Don\u2019t forget your dates.<\/strong> Even functional resumes should include dates of employment, even if they\u2019re only included at the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">8) <strong>Don\u2019t use long paragraphs to describe your accomplishments<\/strong>. If you have a lot of information to convey, use bulleted points instead of dense, wordy paragraphs. Each bullet should be limited to two lines of text, and there should really be no more than five bullets per position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">9) <strong>Don\u2019t use clich\u00e9s<\/strong> <strong>like \u201cdynamic\u201d or \u201cself-starter.\u201d<\/strong> Rather, use the details of your resume to show that you personify these qualities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">10) <strong>Don\u2019t turn your resume into a list of job duties<\/strong>.
