Your B-School Preparation Requires It\" width=\"200\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Like many MBAs who are naturally filled with ambition and competitiveness, I would love to be an elite athlete, but like so many of us mere mortals (MBA or otherwise), I am not.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty good at some things (e.g., I love to get my yah-yahs out on the ski slopes, or tooling around at questionable speeds on my motorcycle), but when it comes to high-performance sports, I know I will never be a Michael Jordan or a Tom Brady.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/beautiful-minds\/2014\/03\/19\/are-you-mentally-tough\/\" target=\"_blank\">a recent article from <i>Scientific American<\/i><\/a>\u00a0caught my eye in its discussion of the notion concerning Mental Toughness, a concept described by, among others, sports psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpinstitute.com\/why-hpi\/our-people\/dr-jim-loehr\" target=\"_blank\">James Loehrer<\/a>, and I realized how applicable the concept is to that competitive sport known as <i>taking the GMAT.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The article describes 12 key attributes of mental toughness, identified from a series of interviews with highly-accomplished athletes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unshakeable self-belief in your ability to achieve goals.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to bounce back from performance set-backs as a result of an increased determination to succeed.<\/li>\n<li>Unshakeable self-belief that you possess unique qualities and abilities that make you better than your competition.<\/li>\n<li>Insatiable desire and internalized motives to succeed.<\/li>\n<li>Remaining fully focused on the task at hand in the face of distraction.<\/li>\n<li>Regaining psychological control following unexpected, uncontrollable events.<\/li>\n<li>Pushing back the boundaries of physical and emotional pain, while still maintaining technique and effort under distress during training and competition.<\/li>\n<li>Accepting that competition anxiety is inevitable and knowing that you can cope with it.<\/li>\n<li>Not being adversely affected by other\u2019s good and bad performances.<\/li>\n<li>Thriving on the pressure of competition.<\/li>\n<li>Remaining fully focused in the face of distractions.<\/li>\n<li>Switching competition focus on and off as required.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As I read through the article, I was struck by how closely parallel these attributes are to those that elite performers on the GMAT must employ for success on Test Day.\u00a0 If we investigate this list a bit more closely, it becomes clear that they can be distilled down to four main aspects of mental toughness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Hope: The unshakeable belief in one\u2019s ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/gmat.kaptest.com\/2014\/01\/02\/set-gmat-score-goal\/#sthash.ytBFLoNY.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">achieve goals<\/a> (\u201c<i>I can think of many ways to get out of a difficult spot and move toward my desired ends<\/i>\u201c).<\/li>\n<li>Optimism: A general expectancy that good things will happen (\u201c<i>In uncertain times, I usually expect the best<\/i>\u201c).<\/li>\n<li>Perseverance: Focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/gmat.kaptest.com\/2014\/01\/16\/tips-high-gmat-score\/#sthash.rsstUNgl.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">achievement of one\u2019s goals<\/a> and not giving up easily when facing adversity (\u201c<i>I am often so determined that I continue working long after others would have given up<\/i>\u201c).<\/li>\n<li>Resilience: The ability to adapt to challenges in <a href=\"https:\/\/gmat.kaptest.com\/2014\/02\/07\/kaplan-exclusive-official-gmat-test-day-experience\/#sthash.gO4jtkeV.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">the environment<\/a> (\u201c<i>I do not dwell on things I can do nothing about<\/i>\u201c).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/gmat\" target=\"_blank\">prepare for the GMAT<\/a>, do you maintain the positive mental focus, optimism, dedication, and resilience you need to perform your best?\u00a0 You can if you want.\u00a0 Now, just do it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"\/Documents%20and%20Settings\/GAllison\/My%20Documents\/Social%20Media\/Blog%20-%20NEW\/JT%20blog%20entry%20Mental%20Toughness,%204-16-14.docx#_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/beautiful-minds\/2014\/03\/19\/are-you-mentally-tough\/<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/gmat.kaptest.com\/2014\/04\/24\/mentally-tough-b-school-preparation-requires\/\">Are You Mentally Tough?
