{"id":2534,"date":"2010-03-04T04:59:46","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T12:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=2534"},"modified":"2010-03-05T05:02:49","modified_gmt":"2010-03-05T13:02:49","slug":"mba-program-selection-post-3-determinging-your-needs-and-wants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/mba-program-selection-post-3-determinging-your-needs-and-wants\/","title":{"rendered":"MBA Program Selection Post #3:  Determinging Your Needs and Wants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: This is #3 in a series of blog posts on the topic, \u201cHow to Select the Right MBA Programs.\u201d To see the whole series to date, link to the following: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/acceptedcom_blog\/2010\/3\/2\/mba-program-selection-assessing-your-profile.html\">Post #1, Introducing the Series; Post #2, Assessing Your Profile<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now that you did the hard work of assessing your profile, put it aside for a moment.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to focus on the future: what you want and need in your MBA program.<\/p>\n<p>Before you compile your schools list, consider the following factors, and decide what\u2019s important to you or what your preference is in each.\u00a0 If you are visiting schools now, the visits can help you sort through these points and see them in a new light.\u00a0 For example, you might have thought you could never spend two years outside a city, but stopping by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/DartmouthTuck.aspx\">Tuck<\/a> on a skiing trip opened your eyes to the abundant diversity and culture the campus and town offer \u2013 you decide to give the excellent program a closer look.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Academics<\/strong>.\u00a0 This category includes the curriculum structure and approach (e.g., preset concentrations versus flexible), strength in particular disciplines, professors in your areas of interest, degree of analytic rigor, opportunity to take courses outside the b-school, study abroad options.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recruiting and career services<\/strong>.\u00a0 Recruiting for both internships and post-MBA positions should be relatively strong for your goals.\u00a0 But people\u2019s actual need for this will vary depending on their existing contacts and resources.\u00a0 Similarly, some people have more need than others of career services support.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extracurricular opportunities<\/strong>.\u00a0 Most people will want to see clubs and activities in their areas of professional interest.\u00a0 Other than that, do you want certain volunteering activities, arts or cultural activities, religious resources, political opportunities?\u00a0 People who share your interests?\u00a0 If you don\u2019t find something you need, would it be easy to initiate a club or activity?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brand<\/strong>.\u00a0 This factor will critical to some, insignificant to others, and somewhere in between for most.\u00a0 There is brand in your own perspective, and brand in the eyes of your prospective employers.\u00a0 Probably the latter is more important and less open to compromise.\u00a0 Do not mistake \u201cbrand\u201d for \u201cranking.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If you need a highly competitive program such as Columbia or Wharton or it isn\u2019t worth it, that\u2019s fine.\u00a0 But the issue isn\u2019t \u201ctop 5\u201d; it\u2019s the value of the specific school brands for your context.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environment and ambience<\/strong>.\u00a0 Do you prefer a warm and fuzzy or a hard driving learning environment?\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone wants diversity it seems, but what kind: geographic, industry, functional, ethnic, religious, other?\u00a0 Do you prefer a small, close-knit campus or a large, teeming one?\u00a0 Does it matter to you if the student body has a more conservative or liberal orientation?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geography<\/strong>.\u00a0 Where would you like to be?\u00a0 Start with continent.\u00a0 Many non-US applicants think globally, considering programs in Asia, Europe, the US.\u00a0 Many Americans however remain fairly US-centric almost reflexively.\u00a0 If you are an American traveling abroad, try to visit some MBA programs.\u00a0 You will be pleasantly surprised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other personal factors<\/strong>.\u00a0 Do you need quick access to an international airport?\u00a0 Special medical resources?\u00a0 Do you want schools that meet your needs and also the needs of your partner who is applying?
