{"id":26645,"date":"2014-12-10T08:52:50","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T15:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=26645"},"modified":"2014-12-10T08:55:13","modified_gmt":"2014-12-10T15:55:13","slug":"to-r3-or-not-to-r3-that-is-the-wsj-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/to-r3-or-not-to-r3-that-is-the-wsj-question\/","title":{"rendered":"To R3 Or Not to R3, That Is The WSJ Question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.accepted.com\/mba\/why-mba\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26646\" alt=\"Round-31-300x201\" src=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Round-31-300x201.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Round 3 applicants used to be viewed as disorganized, but now, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/on.wsj.com\/1zB9Wjz\" target=\"_blank\">recent <i>Wall Street Journal <\/i>article<\/a>, they may be viewed as \u201cappealing but unconventional prospects\u201d or as \u201can offbeat catch\u201d who \u201cliven the mix of an incoming MBA class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was quoted in the article when I explain how the first two rounds are generally dominated by more traditional applicants, but that \u201cin later rounds, schools are looking beyond banking and consulting candidates to fill out their classes with applicants whose backgrounds, experience and goals run the gamut.\u201d Some of these applicants are R1 rejects now <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2014\/05\/20\/reaches-on-pars-and-safeties\/\">applying more realistically at lower ranked schools<\/a>, but others, I explain in the article, \u201care more highly qualified nontraditional candidates.\u201d Often, its applicants with military experience, those who have been involved in startups, and those who come from underrepresented backgrounds who get accepted Round 3 \u2013 these are not applicants that the admission boards want to overlook.<\/p>\n<p>Note that I\u2019m not suggesting that applicants put off applying until Round 3 (especially if they\u2019re ready to submit earlier), but my main point is this: Hope is not lost if you don't apply R1 provided that you have some sparkles on your standard issue cookie.<\/p>\n<p>Dee Leopold, managing director of MBA admissions and financial aid at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/HarvardHBS.aspx\">Harvard Business School<\/a>, agrees, adding, \u201cWe actually enjoy round three. It takes a certain amount of confidence to apply then.
