Applying third round used to send a not-so-subtle message that you may be, well, a procrastinator, and it’s also been said that third-round applicants are at a distinct disadvantage to those who apply earlier since most spots—and scholarships—are already gone by that point. (Poets & Quants) However, some business school admissions officers are saying that third-round applicants these days are unconventional but appealing. (The Wall Street Journal)

There’s a new ranking category in town

It’s no secret that business schools like to have bragging rights over other business schools in categories like job placement, salary, and alumni giving, but there’s a new category in town that business school rankings are competing for: the most startups launched among alumni. (The Wall Street Journal)

Location, location, location

Not sure whether to attend a U.S.-based business school or one overseas? The best question to ask yourself is still the age old, “Where do I want to live and work after graduation?” (U.S. News & World Report)

Traveling with tech

It is increasingly difficult for aspiring MBA students to take off for long periods of time to study, but technology-enabled distance learning is helping some time-strapped managers find a solution. (BusinessBecause)

Shorter doesn’t always mean better

An increasing number of business schools are getting creative—and some might say less demanding—in terms of the personal information they want applicants to share with them. Some business schools have slashed the number of personal essays they require prospective students to submit, while others have cut down on the word count. One just asks you to state your post-graduate goals in a tweet-like blurb. The takeaway, however, is this: while this may sound simple, shorter does not always mean easier. In fact, it’s often the other way around. Coming up with a concise, compelling statement can pose a challenge. (Forbes)

A global business world means global MBA programs

The business world and the MBA programs that produce many of its top leaders face similar challenges and opportunities, writes the dean of Manchester Business School. Learn, adapt, change, and stay current. (The National)

The latest on business schools in China

One American business school professor who has also taught in China, says we can learn a lot about what ails U.S. MBA education from a few Chinese proverbs. (BusinessWeek)

Speaking of China, we have an update for you on that story we shared back in October about corruption among China’s top business schools. Fines are rolling in, and lots of people are going to be paying them. Time to read some proverbs.
