Have questions about your chances at top schools in the third round (R3) of MBA applications? Are you worried that all hope for business school admissions and scholarships is lost?

We’re here to tell you that t’s not. Check out the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about R3 in the MBA admissions process.

Question: Conventional wisdom says that the top MBA programs admit almost all of their incoming class in the first two rounds. Is it worth it to apply when there are so few spaces left?

Answer: Look at it this way. Yes, your chances of gaining fall admission to a top MBA program—a top-10 or even top-40—if you apply in R3 is low, but your chances of gaining fall admission to those top MBA programs if you don’t apply this year at all is even lower—try 0%.

As Rose Martinelli, former Associate Dean for Student Recruitment and Admissions at University of Chicago Booth School of Business, explains, “Somewhere along the line, R3 inherited the reputation of being somewhat irrelevant in the overall admissions cycle…. However, I’d like to emphasize that a good portion of the class will be admitted from R3 as well as a good number being placed on our summer waitlist to help us manage class size this summer. So while fewer spots in the class may be available, it’s important to put together the best possible application you can.”

Martinelli continues, “Candidates are accepted each year at this time, so don’t buy into the doom and gloom. Your dream school should be on your radar no matter what people are saying. Great applicants and great applications are valued in every round as we seek to craft the best class we can.”

Q. Great! So how do I show top MBA programs that I am a “great applicant” with a great MBA application in R3?

A. You want to demonstrate that you are someone who took the quality time to put together a strong MBA application—not someone who simply let the R1 or R2 deadlines get away due to procrastination or indecision. Your resume is polished; your letters of recommendation are glowing; your GMAT scores are solid, and you can use the optional essay in the MBA application to provide a compelling reason for why you waited to apply.

Perhaps you are an undergraduate who wanted to submit a more complete transcript with your application. Maybe you were finishing up a major project at work or taking on more responsibilities through a recent promotion. Perhaps you were in the military, the Peace Corps, or volunteering abroad.

Proving yourself to be someone who is unique or has unconventional prospects to bring to the class can really pay off in round three admissions. As Dee Leopold, the managing director of MBA admissions and financial aid at Harvard Business School explains to the Wall Street Journal, “We actually enjoy round three. It takes a certain amount of confidence to apply then. These applicants march to their own drum, and we would never want to miss them.”

Linda Abraham, co-author of MBA Admission for Smarties: The No-Nonsense Guide to Acceptance at Top Business Schools, adds, “In later rounds, schools are looking beyond banking and consulting candidates to fill out their classes with applicants whose backgrounds, experience, and goals run the gamut.”

Q. So should I just send in applications to test the waters if I am on the fence about applying for the fall? It would be good practice!

A. Taking practice GMAT tests is good; sending in “practice” MBA applications in round three is not. As Jana Blanchette, former admissions director of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, writes, “One line of thinking, which is completely wrong, is a candidate’s strategy to apply in the third round thinking that they will simply re-apply in the first round of the following year if they are dinged. This is a poor strategy because to be a successful “re-applicant” you need to prove to the admissions committee that significant changes have taken place since you last applied (when they rejected you). This is often difficult to do for re-applicants because not much time will have elapsed between round three and round one. Please do not use this strategy.”

You always want to come across as a serious candidate, even in round three.
