A meaningful nugget of information can ripple to great conversation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Last season I was often asked, \u201cHow should I act during my\u00a0MBA visits<\/a>?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s wise to consider, because adcom members start to assess your social intelligence even at this early stage.<\/p>\n

Having an effective \u201celevator pitch\u201d will enable you to attend such visits without anxiety, show you to be socially adept, and free you to focus on listening and responding rather than thinking about what to say in those initial moments.\u00a0 Aim to present a thoughtful, meaningful nugget of information to make a positive first impression and facilitate conversation.\u00a0 You can use your nugget with adcom members,\u00a0MBA students<\/a>, and fellow applicants.\u00a0 With the latter two groups, you can also follow up with \u201cWhat is your industry background?\u201d or \u201cWhat are your post-MBA goals?\u201d<\/p>\n

Your elevator pitch should be one to two sentences only.\u00a0 Its content should usually focus on present and future.\u00a0 The key is to convey\u00a0core information<\/em>\u00a0in a way that is engaging.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are two examples:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Hi, I\u2019m Mary Liu, a consultant in McKinsey\u2019s supply chain practice.\u00a0 I hope to develop and lead the next-generation of supply chain innovations in emerging markets.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Hello, Manish Das here.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been troubleshooting Bank Paribas\u2019 risk management applications in Eastern Europe during the global financial crisis.\u00a0 Post-MBA I want to focus on developing new risk management strategies to avert such crises.<\/p>\n

If there is something important in your past to add for a clearer picture, mention it.\u00a0 E.g., a listener would probably assume Manish Das grew up in India.\u00a0 What if Manish grew up in Kenya, an interesting tidbit: \u201cHello, Manish Das.\u00a0 I grew up in Kenya.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been troubleshooting\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally:\u00a0practice!\u00a0 Your pitch should be natural for you to say, and practicing will help you adjust it to make it so.<\/p>\n
