{"id":29941,"date":"2015-08-04T11:40:36","date_gmt":"2015-08-04T18:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=29941"},"modified":"2016-07-27T16:04:20","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T23:04:20","slug":"innovative-leadership-learning-the-wharton-difference-and-fit-with-the-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/innovative-leadership-learning-the-wharton-difference-and-fit-with-the-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative Leadership Learning: The \u201cWharton Difference\u201d And Fit With The Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/wharton\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32992 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Wharton_undergraduate_students_in_cohorts-300x155.jpg\" alt=\"Register for our webinar!\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>My <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2015\/07\/28\/the-wharton-difference-and-fit-with-the-program\/\">previous post on defining your fit with Wharton<\/a> addressed two of the four components of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mba.wharton.upenn.edu\/the-wharton-mba-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Wharton Difference<\/a>\u201d (Largest Global Network and Culture of Engagement). \u00a0Here I\u2019ll look at the third component: <strong>Innovative Leadership Learning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the Wharton website, the short paragraph introducing this component contains the keys to unlocking its real meaning and import. \u00a0Let\u2019s look at those keys \u2013 literally, the key words and phrases. \u00a0They reveal the adcom\u2019s core interests and values.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0<strong>\u201cYou\u2019ll find your leadership style\u2026\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0Leadership isn\u2019t the pivotal word here, but rather <b>find<\/b>. \u00a0<i>Of course <\/i>MBAs are about leadership. \u00a0But \u201cfind\u201d indicates that the adcom wants people who are \u201cin process\u201d \u2013 seeking, growing, and changing in response to what they learn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0<strong>\u201c\u2026by participating in unmatched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/entrepreneurship.aspx\">entrepreneurship<\/a> and leadership activities.\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0What\u2019s the pivotal word here? \u00a0Yeah, <b>participating<\/b>. \u00a0It means active involvement. \u00a0The little word <b>by <\/b>is important too, because it indicates that this participation is <i>the way through which<\/i> you grow, change (including finding your leadership style).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0<strong>\u201cYou\u2019ll take risks, try new roles\u2026\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0Wharton adcom equates <b>risk-taking<\/b> with action; putting yourself out there; opening up not just intellectually but personally. \u00a0Wharton\u2019s leadership and entrepreneurship (and other) resources offer avenues for risk-takers to try new roles. And note the word <b>try<\/b>: you don\u2019t have to follow a straight, smooth path to a goal; the adcom recognizes the growth value in varied experiences, which you internalize and synthesize along the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022<strong> \u00a0\u201c\u2026inspire others, and work with peers to shape your experience.\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0In a word, collaboration. \u00a0In Wharton\u2019s culture, it\u2019s the magic through which the alchemy of growth happens. \u00a0The verbs <b>inspire<\/b> and <b>shape<\/b> imply deep experience and profound, transforming outcomes. \u00a0Innovative Leadership Learning clearly is more than \u201cgaining skills\u201d and \u201cbuilding networks\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can portray the \u201cInnovative Leadership Learning\u201d component to demonstrate fit with Wharton in your application:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0Throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2014\/06\/18\/wharton-2015-mba-essay-tips-deadlines\/\">your essay(s)<\/a>, weave in anecdotes and examples that show you participating, taking risks through collaboration, inspiring others in the process \u2013 and growing as a leader as a result. \u00a0Given the tight word counts, you can even do this within 1-2 sentences, e.g., \u201cWhen I [did some activity\/initiative], it challenged me to [think differently in some way; be specific], which proved valuable when I subsequently [led in a new capacity].<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0The Wharton interview process is a natural extension of this component \u2013 develop a strategy for portraying these qualities in a way that is natural to you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u00a0In <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/resume_guide\">your resume<\/a> and application form, mention activities where you took initiative and\/or drew others in and\/or \u201cstretched\u201d beyond your comfort zone. \u00a0These won\u2019t be as in-depth as the essays, but they\u2019ll enhance the related points elsewhere in the application.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/wharton?utm_campaign=gmatclub&amp;utm_medium=wharton2016webinar&amp;utm_source=blogcta\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/58291\/hub_generated\/resized\/cae4cebf-c53a-4d4a-915e-1b27967ac4e5\" alt=\"Register to learn how to get accepted to Wharton!\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/aboutus\/CindyTokumitsu\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-8104\" title=\"Cindy Tokumitsu\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/cindy.jpg\" alt=\"Cindy Tokumitsu\" width=\"70\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a> By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/aboutus\/editors.aspx?editorid=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author\">Cindy Tokumitsu<\/a>,\u00a0author and co-author of numerous ebooks, articles, and special reports, including\u00a0<\/em><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/info.accepted.com\/mba\/why-mba\" target=\"_blank\">Why MBA<\/a><em><em> and\u00a0<\/em><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/info.accepted.com\/mba\/where-you-should-apply\/\" target=\"_blank\">Best MBA Programs: A Guide to Selecting the Right One<\/a><em><em>.
