The\u00a0GMAT\u00a0can often be complex. The goal is simple: to get a score that is well above 700,\u00a0but the journey to the best Business Schools in the world is not always that easy. Even\u00a0though there have been volumes written on the best way to prepare and things to keep in\u00a0mind to ensure success, there are still\u00a0mistakes\u00a0made by\u00a0candidates\u00a0- even some of the best.<\/p>\n

Here is a look at\u00a06\u00a0such\u00a0mistakes, and guidelines on how to avoid them and the suggested\u00a0course of action in each case:<\/p>\n

  1. Not starting early enough<\/u>: People who give the\u00a0GMAT\u00a0are usually very busy, and their\u00a0attention is often diverted by work pressures, other applications, and physical tiredness. The\u00a0only way to solve this problem is to start months \u2013 possibly even a year \u2013 in advance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Not finding a coach right off the bat<\/u>: You always need a coach to keep your\u00a0preparation on track. Many\u00a0candidates\u00a0start off thinking that they will do it on their own,\u00a0and then decide to change their minds. Why do it alone when you can work with someone\u00a0who has succeeded a thousand times?\u00a0Spending too much time on one topic: <\/u>If you are not improving at one kind of question\u00a0after repeated work, the marginal utility of spending more of the same kind of time probably\u00a0is not too high. It is best to take a short break and come back with a new and improved strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Listening to uninformed people:<\/u> The\u00a0GMAT<\/a>\u00a0is an accessible examination, but it is also\u00a0something that you should learn about from experts only. It is important to filter out voices\u00a0which do not have proven success at this test, and to listen only to those that are credible\u00a0because of past successes. In general, listen to a small circle of people, who know much\u00a0more than you do about the\u00a0GMAT, and drown out the rest of the noise.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        1. Not practising enough: <\/u>This is true at two levels: some\u00a0candidates\u00a0just do not work out\u00a0enough questions, and this adversely affects their performance. However, some\u00a0GMAT\u00a0aspirants work out far too many problems, and still fall short \u2013 this is because their simulations are\u00a0often not realistic. Till you have given a mock test that is exactly like the real thing, you\u00a0cannot be confident that you are ready for the big day.\u00a0Make\u00a0sure that you get access to as\u00a0many realistic simulations as possible through your coach.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          1. Not staying motivated:<\/u> The best way to spur yourself further is to keep your eyes firmly fixed on the big prize \u2013 the big global MBA that stands at the end of the road.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
