{"id":31167,"date":"2015-11-09T00:59:15","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T07:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=31167"},"modified":"2016-07-27T16:01:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T23:01:48","slug":"3-tips-for-your-team-based-discussion-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/3-tips-for-your-team-based-discussion-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Tips for Your Team-Based Discussion Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_35700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35700\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/services\/mba\/wharton-mock-team-interview.aspx\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35700 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/The-TBD-300x250.png\" alt=\"Prep for your TBD!\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Be nice - build on one another\u2019s comments, not cut them down.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wharton\u2019s interview invitations are out and some of you are lucky enough to be facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/services\/mba\/wharton-mock-team-interview.aspx\">Wharton\u2019s innovative Team-Based Discussion<\/a>, also known as the TBD. \u00a0Personally, I consider this evaluation method an excellent idea, as much of business school life consists of team-based discussion; it was certainly a big part of my life at Sloan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because group evaluation is fairly unusual in the admissions process, interviewees are no doubt nervous about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how should you handle yourself during this discussion in a way that appeals to Wharton?\u00a0 Here\u2019s some advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1. Don\u2019t be confrontational<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong> This is not a presidential candidate debate.\u00a0 In a business school classroom or project group, participants in discussions tend to build on one another\u2019s comments, not cut each other down.\u00a0 These are very smart people, so a show of respect is warranted and disagreements should be handled gracefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2. Don\u2019t hog the conversation<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong> Like other teaching assistants at Sloan who regularly scored students on their participation in class, I graded based on the quality of their comments and what they added to the discussion, not on the quantity of their comments.\u00a0 Chatter is not appreciated in business school conversations; thoughtful points and succinct comments are, and no doubt the same will be true of these Wharton sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3. Keep it real.<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 This year\u2019s Wharton prompt is a fairly practical one about planning a one-day conference. Prepare to discuss existing clubs and conferences, and be ready to plan something new that will contribute to the Wharton community. \u00a0Also, be ready to support your comments with examples from your own background \u2013 either what you\u2019ve experienced firsthand, or what you\u2019ve observed up close.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/services\/mba\/wharton-mock-team-interview.aspx?utm_campaign=gmatclub&amp;utm_medium=mockwhartonTBD&amp;utm_source=blogcta\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/58291\/hub_generated\/resized\/4d150fb4-8511-4452-8f62-7accf4f21b36.png\" alt=\"Have a TBD coming up?
