{"id":31218,"date":"2015-11-10T12:38:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T19:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=31218"},"modified":"2023-10-24T20:37:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T03:37:44","slug":"global-emba-2016-essay-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/global-emba-2016-essay-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Global EMBA 2016 Essay Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/resources\/mba-admissions\/executive-mba-essay-tips\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28712\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/global-business-around-the-world-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"Click here to read more EMBA essay tips\" width=\"286\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You need to know what \"global leader\" means to you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Global EMBA has 2 program options: EMBA-Global Americas &amp; Europe which combines the strengths of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/Columbia.aspx\">Columbia University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/LondonBusinessSchool.aspx\">London Business School<\/a>; and EMBA-Global Asia, with Columbia University, London Business School, and Hong Kong University Business School. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Of course all MBA and EMBA applications are about \u201cfit.\u201d \u00a0The Global EMBA is too \u2013 just more so. \u00a0This adcom <i>really<\/i> focuses on fit, because the program is so unique and intense. \u00a0And the concept of \u201cglobal leader\u201d is a critical part of that fit. \u00a0How it\u2019s embodied will be unique to each applicant; ensure that your essays reflect your own mindset and vision of global leadership. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The adcom also looks for applicants who truly understand and will make productive use of this distinctive educational opportunity, which comprises multiple campuses and schools each with its own particular focus, opportunities, and areas of excellence. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The three essay questions vary in approach, thus requiring you to present yourself effectively from different angles. \u00a0There\u2019s a fairly classic <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2014\/07\/23\/goals-essay-writing-nitty-gritty\/\">goals essay<\/a>, a \u201cstory\u201d (behavioral) essay, and an open \u201cstatement.\u201d \u00a0The challenge is to employ a consistent individual voice while also adapting it to the various essay types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>EMBA GLOBAL ESSAY QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essay 1\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why do you wish to participate in the EMBA-Global programme? What do you hope to experience and how will participation in this programme help you to achieve your objectives?\u00a0(<em>Maximum 500 words<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Here\u2019s that goals question. \u00a0First a note about the <i>nuance<\/i> of the question: notice the words <strong>wish, hope, experience,<\/strong> and <strong>participate\/participation<\/strong><b>. <\/b>\u00a0These words imply an immersive, personal, community, collaborative orientation. \u00a0In the essay (and indeed throughout the application) show how you fit with this holistic approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Structure: I\u2019ve found that it\u2019s intuitive and logical to start the essay by discussing your goals \u2013 the objectives at the very end of the question. \u00a0(And add a word about what motivates them.) \u00a0You will then naturally move into what you hope to experience from the program, because your professional goals <i>create<\/i> your learning needs. \u00a0This part can (indeed should) include a personal component as well. \u00a0To address participation, discuss elements beyond the classroom where you will learn and contribute, such as clubs, social interactions, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essay 2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please describe a situation either work or personal where you faced a particular challenge. What was the outcome and what did you learn from the experience about your own strengths and personal development needs?\u00a0(M<em>aximum 500 words<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This is the story. \u00a0I suggest selecting a topic that\u2019s relatively recent. \u00a0Make it a situation with some significant stakes, and one that yielded meaningful insight, growth, and change. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Structure: Jump right into the story. \u00a0Avoid preambles that give away the ending! \u00a0This straightforward approach grips the reader and frees up space for detail and narrative, which is the way to grip the reader. \u00a0As you walk through what happened, highlight your actions and add in snippets of what you were thinking (and even feeling). \u00a0Conclude with a paragraph reflecting on what you learned about your strengths and development needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal statement\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please tell us about yourself and your background. How do you embody the characteristics of a future global leader?
